Interesting that this stair is solid mahogany (under the adhesive is plywood), should I sand and stain it? The aluminum carpet trim is original (was held down with frearson screws), is that anything special that anyone wants??

Solid Mahogany? I’d try to save it, may be more work than worth though. You’re call!????✈️
our mahogany stairs are varnished clear – look great.
All depends on how “original” you want to be… If you are going to exhibit at Clayton or Tahoe, you better find an original catalog and/or owner’s manual!.. User boat? Let the creative juices flow!
I would try to save it. just me.
From what I’ve seen all the wood in my Commander is mahogany or mahogany ply, even framing where it’s never seen. So this doesn’t entirely surprise me.
I see this area as a potential slip hazard with wet feet. At some point that will occur. Guests you have on board don’t have sea legs under them most of the time. Boat is rocking etc. I did some Sikkens once with silica sand embedded in to it. It was functionally period correct in appearance.
I used to stock this stuff at the marina I worked at, cuts thru 5200 and polysulfite very well
