My hull number is 29 of 33 made in 1964. Seems odd that they made 29 before mid May and then only 4 more the rest of the year? Was there some reason that hull numbers were not produced or delivered in order? #nauticinderella

Keep in mind CC did some custom work if required, especially on the biggest models. They also followed the car industry, building some boats before the model year started, based on sales of the year before. My Challenger was built in october of 63, as a 1964 model.

It might be that maybe CC made a big marketing push at the beginning of a new model year and boat show season along with maybe a few models for inventory. Then after that they might have only built them to order as customers wanted them.

Hay some boats not finished in 63 so 64 say they had 15 ready to go the numbers start on jan 1 of that year also cc was pushing a lot of boats out and small changes to different hulls this is my understanding of how they did it but not 100 %

I think all the comments here are pretty correct. CC was a ‘production’ boat builder using the medium of the day… wood. We look at wood as a far more custom material than CC did 60 years ago.

Very cool Cindy…Can you attach a photo of the rest of the build card??? I have yet to get mine from the Museum yet, but i know all the history of my boat (1971 38 Commander Sedan FB)… Originally special ordered by Edward Claussen of Claussen Dill Pickle fame, from Rodi Chris Craft, Fort Lauderdale store, to be delivered to Rodi, Chicago Store, May 1971. Original invoice says $68, 371.95 FOB Holland, MI 😉

Production years usually run August – August … So the first 1964 boats would have been built in August of 1963. the last ones late July – early august. .this is how most manufacturers do it give or take a month.. So a shipping date of 5-19-64 would be about 10 months or 5/6 of the way through the year. the boat is just about right it is about 87% of the way through the production of 33 boats. and using august 1 as the start date 292 days to May 19 is about 80% through the build year . So the date works pretty well …

The boats may have had different engines sitting in storage .. boats would have gone out based on engines . and there is not reason to ship a boat out in any particular order once it is built.. A boat out the door is a boat out the door…

In the 1950s with little change in model year and no way to tell from the hull # it is hard to pinpoint the date or year of a boat . almost based on ship date. Buy the 1960s CC changed more in hull # from year to year which makes it much easier to tell an actual year of a boat . Also with some research we could tell more of the actual switch over date from one year to the next . It is going to be early August. Once the Summer was over Chris Craft needed to only be shipping the next year boat.

Another characteristic I’ve observed (Great Lakes) is if the boats not sold by 4th of July its not likely going to be. Big pushes starting with boat shows January/Feb on thru early summer

I believe it was 1972 CG wanted hull #’s permanently installed, mainly because end seller couldn’t update the boats year…although when I became a dealer in late 70’s, the hull number was etched in a piece of plastic, fastened with 2 pins, don’t know how they got away with that…..

So my hull card states out the door 16 February 1959. Hull number 435. The first one would have been CM-32-001 built in 1954 until CM-32-048, then none built until 1957 when they started with CM-32-201 and ended production in 1959 with CM-32-460. So why did they skip CM-32-049 to CM-32-200? Or did they start over with even 100 each year, in that case the essential guide would be wrong with total hulls built if the run was several years? According to Essential guide there where 17 Express built, hull numbers must be within all Commanders. My cover has number SC-32-003 that would be the same number as a hull number for a Sedan cruiser from 1958, why using a number like that? The 1953 to 1954 Express had its own hull number designation with X-32-001 to X-32-142, according to essential guide 142 hulls but then we need to know that they did not start 1954 with X-32-100?
