So even the Chris Craft master, zillion hour ex tow boat US captain goofs occasionally… Departed Key West on the next leg of the journey, went through the checklist (mental one) and checked a questionable impeller (it was fine), left the dock and engine over heated 5 minutes later why??? (but he repaired on the go running on one engine) #MissMarianne

Murphy’s Law??
Must have lost its prime when he pulled the cover off to inspect. Doesn’t take long if impeller is dry. Hope he found all the stripped off vanes.
Doug, close but no cigar
Was it pumping out water immediately when he started it?
Didn’t open the ball valve?
Hope you retrieved all the pieces of that impeller…more problems if there going through the engine.
Stephen, bingo!!! Forgot to open the seacock
Even the best of captains have their senior moments!
Wow.. that V8 takes up a lot less space than the Detroits… I’m envious of all the space you have above the engine block!
The doctor is in….. the bilge.
Awe snap
Where is your next stop?
Not sure if you can follow us on AIS, would be cool to have a photo of her cruising through ft Lauderdale
What is AIS?
I’ve been off the water for thirty years
We can see you. 14.8 knots.
Be happy you got the mercruiser pumps/ impellers , if you had the 427’s it would be a different deal..
Sorry about the oversight. We all have those moments.
BEAUTYFULLLL.
Crusaders?
Albert Bartkus order 4 more of these please 🙂
And so guess what we did this morning??
I believe there’s an impeller kit that’s advertises “run dry”

She’s got this, only took 5 tries, took me More than that. You have to glide the impeller in without knocking the key out
Just guessing here, but this is the way I would have done it:
– Step I – wonder about impeller
– Step 2 – shut off sea cock
– Step 3 – check impeller
– Step 4 – determine that impeller is okay
– Step 5 – reassemble sea pump
– Step 6 – start engines and get going.
(Am I missing any steps here..?)
A big dab of grease really helps hold the key in place…
You can also use a hose clamp to compress the vanes a little like a piston ring squeezer to get it started into the housing.
They are tricky
A little Vaseline would hold that keyway plus lube the housing keep from dry starting
Engines are the devils work.
Anyone who can fix them should burn as a witch.
I recommend using dishwashing liquid (Dawn or Palmolive) to hold the key in place and to lube the impeller vanes. Anything petroleum-based won’t disperse for quite some time and may degrade rubber parts. The dish soap just washes away. Old mechanics trick!
