While I have been holding here I decided to do some maintenance on Marianne including oil changes, plugs and cap/rotor. This is how the cap and rotor look after a seemingly short time. 6-8 weeks but 1900 miles and 175 hours on them.i was actually not going to do the cap and rotor. Glad I checked. 454 Crusader XL with efi. Notice the corrosion on terminals. #missmarianne.

Been doing the same every 100 hours, check them every 50hrs. along with oil/filter changes. I have Crusader 454’s with carbs and HST ignition.
Distributor caps are strange. Years ago I had a crusader 350 and it started to run a bit off. Nothing horrible but I checked the cap. The rotor was actually cutting a groove in the corrosion on the contacts and it was still running. Last spring I had an intermittent backfire while running at 3000rpm. Pulled the cap, and the contacts looked pretty clean but replaced cap and rotor; problem solved.
Good catch, down in the salt air some maintenance items require more frequent checks. Parts don’t seem to last like they once did, I think the metals used are more inferior in the name of cutting costs.
You would probably have better luck and more longevity out of a cap with brass contacts as opposed to one with aluminum
what kinda coils are you runnin?
Should also note that she was running fine. Just have 175 hours on them. I don’t think that’s unusual. Lot of heating up and cooling down. Plus the water up north was colder and inevitable seating will happen around the engines. Now I just have to deal with the salt air.
That’s why you spent 50yrs fresh water boating????????
Is that the motor you had issues with ?
How’s the vintage carpet holding up
You will be so happy you did this… the engines will just smile when you turn the key! ????????????
Clean with sand paper and u will save money and will be good as new!!!!
