This oxidation is horrible I thought maybe it was primer but it didn't budge with paint stripper. It also didn't budge with aluminum restorer acid. (Turns out it's faded anodized aluminum) So I started with 240 sandpaper, but 80 grit was really the only thing it would make any headway. It took two weekends but it's all gone and gradually sanded down to 1000 grit. There was hundreds of scratches that are nearly all gone and a couple of dings we'll address later … But one side is ready for polish. #rocket

The first picture is where I've sanded down to 3000 grit. The second picture is where we sanded with 80 and 180 grit. The last two pictures are very heavily oxidized and scratched, I should have gotten a picture of the sections of the boat that were badly scratched before we started sanding… But I didn't. I think a previous owners docking method was to just run into the dock with the bow.

The kiddo has been studying the airstream aluminum polishing on YouTube but we still have to figure out if there's a way to pop out the dents or touch up / fill in the deeper scratches. I'm a wooden boat girl so I'm used to just mixing up the sawdust with epoxy to use for a little filler. There's got to be a trick for aluminum?? Brody Campbell #rocket

So where the boat has been docked over the years there's several scratches on the port side especially towards the bow. The kiddo and I have his and her Sanders now. So reduce our learning curve in this painful process!!! We've got a huge box of varying grades of sanding discs from 80 grit to 3000 grit. We've got some spots that are obviously going to need to go to the dent repair shop or something. Is this top layer oxidation? And do I take it all down to bare metal before I start going up in the grit on sandpaper? We are going back to bare aluminum not sure of the finish yet. All paint above the waterline is being removed, the white bottom is staying. #rocket
